An Introduction…

Hello! My name is Sydney and on April 11th, 2022, I was formally diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (or DID for short). If that name doesn’t ring any bells, its former one certainly will.

Multiple personality disorder.

I remember half-expecting to feel crushed after this confirmation or outraged in some way that this could possibly be true in the first place, but if I’m completely honest here, one of the main things I felt leaving that psychiatrist’s office was a sense of relief. And there’s no shame in saying that.

By that point I had survived a breakdown, a suicide attempt, nearly two weeks spent between two different hospitals, and I still had numerous “therapeutic” doors shut in my face. Why? Well, doctors didn’t believe it to even be a possibility, that’s why! To this day, I will never understand how you can verify all of someone’s symptoms, acknowledge they fit the criteria for something as closely as possible, and still insist that “it all must be because they’re young and stressed”.

Still with persistence and the unrelenting support of my family, I was able to finally find a specialist that not only worked solely with DID, but I was also able to meet his colleague and finally get the answer to a question that I didn’t even have the words for until just a few weeks before that day. My spiraling speculations, fears, doubts, you name it; they all finally had a label that allowed me to get the help that I needed. A label that I could actually research and understand so I could get to know myself better! That is truly a wonderful feeling.

Please feel free to look around our site to learn not just about this disorder in general, but also our individual experiences with it—whether that be through written pieces/updates, art, or videos uploaded to our channel—and most importantly, thank you for stopping by! :)
